The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has cautioned against the illegal printing of National Identity Number (NIN) cards by individuals and business centers.
In a statement released by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, the commission announced its plan to introduce an Enhanced General Multi-Purpose Card (GMPC), which will function both as an official identification card and a payment tool.
NIMC raised concerns over reports that some people and businesses have been unlawfully producing and distributing NIN cards at high costs.
The commission clarified that no person or organization has been permitted to create alternative versions of the GMPC, warning that such actions violate the NIMC Act 23 of 2007.
The public was urged to refrain from accepting or using unauthorized NIN cards, as only the official NIN slip is recognized as a valid means of identification.
Security agencies have been notified to take action against those involved in the illegal activity, and offenders will face legal consequences.
NIMC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity of the national identity system and warned that anyone found guilty of unauthorized card issuance would be prosecuted accordingly.
