Police in Ondo State have retrieved three headless corpses found floating in a river near the Odigbo-Ore Road. The bodies, already in an advanced state of decomposition, were spotted by passersby on Sunday.
An eyewitness, who identified himself as Shileola, said the discovery came as a shock to the local residents, especially since no missing persons had been reported within nearby communities. He suggested that the victims were likely murdered elsewhere and their remains disposed of in the river.
“When I received the news, I rushed down immediately, hoping to recognize the victims by their clothes or any visible detail, but I couldn’t identify them,” he said.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Alayande Olayinka, said that officers from the Ore Division responded swiftly to the report. A team led by the Divisional Police Officer visited the scene and recovered the bodies, which were later transported to a mortuary.
According to Olayinka, the police invited community members and relevant groups to assist in identifying the deceased, but no one has come forward with any helpful information so far.
He added that due to the river’s location—bordering Ogun and Edo States—it is possible the victims were killed in another state and dumped in the river, where the current may have carried them to where they were found.
Investigations are ongoing as police work to determine the identities of the victims and unravel the circumstances surrounding the tragic discovery.
