NiMet projects mixed weather, says sunshine, thunderstorms expected across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released a weather forecast indicating a combination of sunshine and thunderstorms in various parts of the country from Tuesday through Thursday.

In its latest update shared on Monday in Abuja, NiMet stated that the northern region will mostly experience clear and sunny skies throughout the forecast period.

The North Central zone is expected to see sunshine with occasional clouds.

There is also the possibility of isolated thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours in areas such as the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Nasarawa, Kwara, and Kogi.

In the southern part of Nigeria, thunderstorms are likely in the morning across parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom. Later in the day, scattered thunderstorms could occur in areas including Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Lagos, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom.

For Wednesday, NiMet forecasts continued sunny conditions in the North, while southern Taraba might witness early morning thunderstorms.

North Central areas are expected to remain mostly sunny with chances of thunderstorms later in the day, particularly in the FCT, Nasarawa, Plateau, Kwara, and Kogi.

In the southern region, a mix of clouds and sunshine is expected with chances of morning thunderstorms in Akwa Ibom and Cross River. Additional thunderstorms may occur by afternoon or evening across Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Edo, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Delta.

By Thursday, the northern states are likely to maintain sunny conditions.

The central region will also experience clear skies with possible thunderstorms later in the day in parts of the FCT, Plateau, and Nasarawa.

In the South, early thunderstorms are predicted in Cross River and Akwa Ibom, followed by potential rainfall in the afternoon or evening across Enugu, Oyo, Ondo, Imo, Abia, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, and Bayelsa.

NiMet advised citizens to take precautions against heat stress due to high temperatures by staying in ventilated environments and staying hydrated.

It also encouraged vaccinations against meningitis, regular handwashing, wearing face masks, and avoiding overcrowded areas.

People were also urged to reduce exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours, typically from noon to 3 p.m., and to be cautious of strong winds that may precede rainfall.

Airlines are encouraged to obtain updated, location-specific weather information from NiMet for effective flight operations, while the general public is advised to stay informed via official weather channels or by visiting www.nimet.gov.ng.
