Security forces on patrol in Plateau State rescued 16 people, including six children, who had been kidnapped along the Jos–Mangu road, the Nigerian Army confirmed.
Troops participating in Operation SAFE HAVEN and 3 Division were conducting a security sweep when they found a deserted vehicle at Mararaban Kantoma, Mangu LGA, around 9 p.m. on April 13.
The discovery raised suspicion of a possible abduction. Acting swiftly, the troops combed the surrounding forest.
Upon locating the kidnappers, the suspects opened fire. The army, however, responded with “superior firepower,” compelling the kidnappers to abandon their hostages and flee into the night.
“Immediate action by our forces ensured all hostages were freed unharmed, though some needed minor medical attention,” a source within OPSH told reporters. The victims were later escorted to safety en route to Jos.
Troops are currently tracking the fleeing suspects, who are believed to have sustained gunshot injuries during the confrontation.
OPSH assured the public that operations to protect life and property remain a top priority.
