A youth wing of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is demanding that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) revive its corruption probe into Bello Matawalle, now serving as the Minister of State for Defence.
During a protest on Friday at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, members of the APC Young Leaders Alliance (APC-YLA), led by Mohammed Ireji, delivered a petition urging the anti-graft agency to investigate Matawalle’s financial dealings during his time as governor of Zamfara State.
The petition alleges that over N528 billion in state funds were embezzled under his administration.
According to Ireji, the group had previously submitted complaints in May and September 2024, yet no significant progress has been reported.
“This delay raises concerns about selective justice and potential political shielding,” he said.
EFCC’s Acting Director of Security, Idowu Adedeji, acknowledged receipt of the petition and assured that it would be handled appropriately.
The APC-YLA cited the commission’s successful prosecutions of other political figures as evidence that no individual should be above the law.
They specifically referenced former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello, former Minister Betta Edu, and ex-Taraba Governor Darius Ishaku as examples.
Ireji stressed that their demands are grounded in verified data, not conjecture. He implored the EFCC to apply the same vigour it has shown in past investigations to the case of Matawalle.
