Niger declares Hausa as national language, breaks further from French colonial influence

In a major cultural and political shift, Niger’s military-led government has designated Hausa as the country’s official national language, marking a decisive step away from its colonial legacy where French held prominence.

This development was outlined in a new national charter dated March 31 and released through a special publication of the government’s official journal.

The document states, “The national language is Hausa,” while identifying English and French as the official working languages.

Hausa is already the most widely spoken language across the country, particularly dominant in regions like Zinder, Maradi, and Tahoua.

The language is understood and used by the vast majority of Niger’s estimated 26 million people. In contrast, French is spoken by only about three million citizens, roughly 13 percent of the population.

In addition to Hausa, the charter recognizes nine other indigenous languages—among them Zarma-Songhay, Fula, Kanuri, Gourmanche, and Arabic—as the commonly spoken languages of the nation.

The announcement coincided with a political gathering where the junta leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani, secured a mandate to continue ruling for another five years.

Since overthrowing President Mohamed Bazoum in a July 2023 coup, the military government has consistently distanced Niger from its former colonial ruler, France.

This detachment has included the expulsion of French military forces, the severing of diplomatic ties, and the renaming of streets and public buildings previously named in French.

Niger’s move aligns with similar actions taken by fellow former French colonies Mali and Burkina Faso, which are also under military rule.

These nations have collectively withdrawn from the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, an international body promoting French language and culture, much like the Commonwealth supports English-speaking countries.
