The President of the United States Africa Command, Ghana (AFRICOM), Mr. Abednego Orstin Rawlings, has expressed confidence that former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama will play a pivotal role in ending the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Rawlings referenced historical precedents, recalling how global leaders once appointed Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, as a special envoy during peace negotiations aimed at achieving a ceasefire during the Vietnam War.
He emphasized that Africa, once again, could be the key to resolving international conflicts.
“The world’s leaders have failed to secure peace between Russia and Ukraine, and the United States, under President Donald Trump, has also lost focus,” Rawlings remarked.
“The African continent is now the last hope for peace, and Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama is the leader with the potential to facilitate a ceasefire and lasting resolution.”
Rawlings pointed out that Russian President Vladimir Putin has historically shown affection for Africa, suggesting that African leaders might be able to influence him.
He also criticized Russian military generals for misleading Putin regarding the war.
“From our studies, we believe only an African leader like President Mahama can lead efforts towards peace and end this war,” Rawlings added, underlining Mahama’s unique position to mediate.
Rawlings emphasized that it is divine intervention, rather than military force, that will bring an end to the conflict, stating, “Only President Mahama, with God’s guidance, can halt the senseless killing of innocent lives.”
He further urged both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to consider the futility of the war, noting, “Neither of them will take any land with them when they die. It’s time for them to stop the bloodshed and make peace.”
