A planned attack by armed men on a security checkpoint in Isuofia, Aguata LGA of Anambra State, was repelled by the Joint Security Force on Thursday night.
Two of the attackers were eliminated in the shootout, while the operatives suffered the loss of one officer.
Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Friday, noting that the armed assailants were forced to retreat, leaving behind a Toyota Sienna vehicle after facing heavy resistance.
During the confrontation, the attackers managed to torch one security vehicle.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the incident, asserting that it was a provocation aimed at testing the unity and resilience of Anambra’s people and their support for law enforcement.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice.
The area has since been stabilised, and security agents are combing the surrounding bushes in pursuit of the fleeing gunmen.
