A student heading to write his WAEC examination lost his life on Tuesday morning after being struck by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a police officer during a chase in Ibadan.
The tragic event occurred along the Gbagi Market axis, where law enforcement officers were reportedly pursuing suspected internet fraudsters. In the course of the operation, one of the bullets fired is said to have hit the student, who was riding on a motorcycle with his twin brother.
The victim was quickly taken to Welfare Hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival.
Following the incident, angry traders and sympathisers took the student’s body to the Oyo State Government Secretariat, demanding justice and an end to reckless police actions.
The protest led to heightened security at the secretariat’s entrance, as security personnel moved in to prevent further unrest.
As at the time of reporting, no official statement had been released by either the Oyo State Police Command or the state government.
