Student group describes ASUU strike as unjustified

-

A student body operating under the banner Concerned Kaduna State Students has voiced strong opposition to the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Kaduna State University (KASU), labeling it as “unnecessary”.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the group expressed dismay over the endorsement of the strike by certain student leaders, alleging that they are being influenced by individuals working against the interests of the lecturers—who, according to the group, are advocating for both academic staff and students alike.

“The ongoing ASUU action at KASU could have been avoided,” the statement noted. “The union only proceeded with the strike after all attempts at dialogue failed and the government neglected to fulfill agreed-upon commitments.”

The group outlined several grievances that led to the industrial action. These include unpaid salaries from May to September 2022, outstanding earned academic allowances since 2016, pending promotion arrears, and pension contributions covering the period from 2009 to 2019.

Also highlighted were issues such as the lack of group life insurance coverage and violations of institutional autonomy.

Calling for a swift resolution, the group urged the Kaduna State Government to urgently address the lecturers’ concerns. They also appealed to civil society groups to intervene and encourage Governor Uba Sani to prioritize both staff welfare and the future of students.

They emphasized that education is a fundamental right and not a luxury, adding that resolving the lecturers’ demands is crucial for the progress of the state’s educational system.

“The dignity of our higher institutions must be maintained, and this starts with investing in quality education and the well-being of academic personnel,” the group concluded.
