A significant settlement has been reached in a lawsuit regarding historical sexual abuse claims at Celtic Boys Club. Thompsons Solicitors, representing around 30 former players, announced that approximately 70% of the cases have been settled by Celtic Plc, with further settlements expected in the coming weeks.
The lawsuit pertains to abuse committed by convicted pedophiles James Torbett and Frank Cairney at the youth club, which was not formally affiliated with Celtic FC.
Laura Connor, partner at Thompsons Solicitors, stated: “Our clients have shown remarkable dignity throughout this lengthy and complex litigation. This compensation serves as acknowledgment of the inextricable link between Celtic Boys Club and Celtic Football Club.”
A judge previously allowed the group legal action to proceed at Scotland’s Court of Session in Edinburgh, despite Celtic Plc’s arguments that the boys’ club was a separate entity.
Celtic FC has expressed being “appalled by any form of historic abuse” and was contacted for comment on the settlement.
