Senate criticizes single payment system, calls for comprehensive reform

-

The Senate has expressed dissatisfaction with the existing single payment system, labeling it a significant obstacle to Nigeria’s economic advancement.

Speaking during Thursday’s plenary session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio denounced the system, asserting that it was impeding national development and should be abolished without delay.

He stressed the urgency of implementing a thorough reform to improve operational efficiency and accelerate economic progress.

Lawmakers also took issue with the centralized payment structure, which requires over 700 Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to process financial transactions through a single office.

They argued that the policy has led to inefficiencies, delays in project execution, and diminishing public trust, particularly in communities anticipating critical infrastructure development.
