Security concerns trigger curfew in Benue LG

-

Amid escalating violence in parts of Benue State, Hon. Ormin Torsar Victor, Chairman of Gwer West Local Government Area, has imposed a daily curfew starting at 6:30 p.m.

The restriction, which is effective immediately, seeks to limit evening travel and enhance local safety.

Victor made the announcement in an official statement on Sunday, stressing the urgent need to implement the curfew to protect lives and property.

He advised that all movement into and out of the LGA must occur before the stated time.

Local officials have indicated that the curfew will be reviewed periodically based on changes in the security landscape.

The decision follows a surge in deadly incidents within the region.

Just days before the announcement, two communities—Jato-Acka and Ayilamo—were hit by coordinated attacks allegedly carried out by herdsmen.

The assaults, which occurred on May 9, resulted in the deaths of nine individuals.

Over 20 armed attackers reportedly stormed Jato-Acka, killing six people and setting buildings ablaze, then moved to Ayilamo, where three others, including a Livestock Guard, were slain.

These events mark the latest in a string of violent clashes attributed to ongoing tensions between herders and farmers.

Local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate fully with security measures.
