Renewed banditry forces thousands to flee villages in Sokoto

-

A new round of violent raids by armed loyalists linked to Bello Turji has forced inhabitants of more than 20 villages in Sokoto State to flee for their lives, as reports of chaos and displacement spread across the region.

Displaced individuals have found temporary refuge in Gatawa town, located within Sabon Birni LGA.

Fear of further attacks has driven many villagers to abandon their homes and seek safety elsewhere.

Gatawa resident Mallam Saminu, who spoke with Punch, described the situation as dire. “Yes, people have been displaced in large numbers.

Many are living with relatives, while others are staying in two secondary schools—one near a military post and the other within the town,” he said.

The affected villages include Katsalle, Dama, Makira, Dan Kura, Shabanza, Gaugai, Dan Tazako I–III, and Garin Tunkiya, among others.

This development adds to the growing concerns over security lapses in Sokoto’s eastern flank, where communities remain vulnerable despite ongoing military interventions meant to suppress banditry and safeguard lives.
