A destructive rainstorm has caused significant damage in Kurya, a community in Kaduna State, leaving widespread devastation in its path.
The storm brought down rooftops and walls, with the local primary school suffering the worst impact, leaving hundreds of pupils without a learning facility.
Eyewitnesses said the storm came with little warning, unleashing strong winds and heavy rain that lasted under an hour but left lasting destruction.
One of the school’s staff members, Mrs. Ruth Yakubu, expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
“We had already closed for the day and locked up the school. None of us imagined the building would be completely destroyed by evening,” she told our correspondent. “We’re grateful there were no casualties, but it’s a huge blow to the children’s education.”
The storm struck on Wednesday evening, May 14, 2025, around 5:00 p.m., hitting Kurya in the Ikara Local Government Area. Residents say it was the most severe weather event the area has witnessed in years.
Community elders have appealed to the Kaduna State Government and emergency response agencies for swift intervention.
Though no lives were lost, the incident has deepened concerns over access to education in a region already struggling with limited infrastructure.
