Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, says he has the capability to lead Nigeria as president but believes the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) must first be put in proper shape before such ambitions can be considered.
Makinde shared his thoughts during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday. Now in his second term as governor under the PDP, he noted that the 2027 presidential election would be more about the people’s will than just party rivalry.
“I have no doubt about my ability to occupy Nigeria’s highest political office. I believe I possess the competence and experience required,” Makinde said.
“However, the question is—are Nigerians seeking that from me? Will my party support such a move? These are things we don’t yet know; there’s still a lot of time before 2027.”
The governor emphasized the need to first strengthen the PDP before any individual ambition could be pursued.
“We must first fix the PDP. You need a solid political structure before aiming for any position, especially at the national level,” he said.
Speaking on his political journey, Makinde expressed contentment with how far he has come.
“When I ventured into politics in 2007, I was aiming for a Senate seat. Now, I’ve had the privilege of serving as a two-term governor. I’m grateful to the people for that opportunity. Even if my political career ends here, I consider it a meaningful and fulfilling journey.”
