An outbreak of pneumonia has affected 99 Indonesian pilgrims on Hajj in Saudi Arabia, the country’s Health Ministry disclosed on Thursday, with one person confirmed dead.
The ministry revealed that all infected individuals are under medical supervision in Mecca and Medina.
Liliek Susilo, who leads the Hajj Health Centre, warned that the surge in cases is worrisome. “The rise in pneumonia cases among our hajj pilgrims needs careful attention because it can get worse if not treated fast and correctly,” she said.
She highlighted that high temperatures, exhaustion from the pilgrimage activities, dense crowds, and pre-existing medical conditions are the key contributors to the infections.
Pilgrims were advised to take preventive steps, including wearing face masks, drinking plenty of water, maintaining hygiene, and avoiding unnecessary strain. Reporting symptoms early and following medical advice were also stressed to ensure a safe pilgrimage.
