Nigerian Army vows to end insurgency as terrorists shift tactics

Major General AE Abubakar, the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, has assured Nigerians that the military remains fully committed to ending terrorism in the Northeast despite recent attacks by insurgent groups.

Speaking during a press interaction, he provided insight into the current security situation and outlined the Army’s renewed approach to countering the threats.

He acknowledged that while peace has largely returned to the region, some isolated attacks have occurred.

“There’s no doubt we’ve made significant progress. Compared to five to ten years ago, the region is far more stable,” he said. He explained that war often involves several coordinated campaigns, and while there may be setbacks, the overall success rate remains high.

“In just the past week, over 20 insurgents have been eliminated, and a cache of weapons and ammunition recovered,” he revealed, noting that operations continue on multiple fronts. Communities such as Malam Fatori and Kukawa have seen the return of nearly 20,000 displaced residents, a sign of growing confidence in the military’s efforts.

However, he linked the recent resurgence of violence to insecurity across the broader Sahel region.

According to him, arms looted from neighboring countries often find their way into Nigeria through the nation’s porous borders, fueling fresh attacks.

“Two years ago, we were on the verge of declaring the conflict over, but the instability in surrounding Sahel nations has complicated the situation,” he added.

One notable change, according to the commander, is the evolving tactics of the terrorists.

“Since November last year, we’ve observed the use of armed drones in attacks—devices that are hard to detect using regular radar systems,” he said.

In light of these developments, the military has adjusted its strategy.

“We’ve reorganized and brought in additional troops and equipment. Even I am part of these changes, having assumed command just two weeks ago,” he stated.

He also noted that the Chief of Army Staff had recently visited the region to assess and support these efforts.

Despite a few attacks in places like Iran, Kikwa, and Gajeran, which resulted in the unfortunate loss of four soldiers, the commander said most attacks were effectively repelled.

He reassured Nigerians of the Army’s determination to bring the crisis to an end.

“We are fully prepared and have the resources needed to win this fight once and for all,” he said, urging for national support.

To the insurgents, Major General Abubakar advised surrender, noting that those who have laid down arms are being treated humanely.

“The military’s morale is high. Our men are motivated, and we are determined to bring this to a successful end,” he stressed.

He also called on Nigerians to see the fight against terrorism as a shared duty.

“Our area of operation covers over 150,000 square kilometers—larger than many countries. One of the conflict hotspots, the Tumbuktu Triangle, is over 11,000 square kilometers, which is bigger than Rivers, Bayelsa, and Washington State combined,” he explained.

Referencing a famous military strategy, he said: “In asymmetric warfare, separating the terrorists from the civilian population is key. Everyone has a role to play.”

He cited a recent operation in which 13,000 liters of petrol, allegedly headed for a terrorist hideout, were seized.

“That quantity of fuel could have kept their motorcycles running for a year,” he said, emphasizing the need for communities to work with security forces by reporting suspicious activity.

The commander concluded by expressing confidence in the eventual defeat of insurgency, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and cooperative.
