Six Nigerian women freed after detention in Cape Verde

The Federal Government has secured the freedom of six Nigerian women who were wrongfully held in Cape Verde over unfounded trafficking claims.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the women have been released and have left Cape Verde. The Nigerian Mission in Guinea Bissau was instrumental in liaising with Cape Verdean authorities to ensure their freedom.

The ministry explained that the women had travelled for leisure purposes but were detained based on false trafficking allegations, which were later dismissed after investigations.

The Ministry expressed relief at the positive resolution of the case and emphasized its continued commitment to defending the rights of Nigerians overseas.

“We are pleased to report that the Nigerian women who were detained in Cape Verde have now been freed and have departed the country. Our mission in Guinea Bissau worked diligently with the Cape Verdean government to facilitate their release. The women were on a holiday trip when they were wrongly accused of trafficking,” the statement read.

MCC had yesterday reported how the tourists were held in Cape Verde.
