The Rivers State House of Assembly has expressed its support for President Bola Tinubu’s decision to impose a state of emergency in the state.
In a statement, Speaker Martin Amaewhule affirmed that the Assembly would comply with the president’s directive, even though it was not their preferred outcome.
“We will respect this decision, despite it not being what we had hoped for. The president has acted in the nation’s best interest,” Amaewhule said.
He attributed the state’s instability to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, accusing him of repeatedly ignoring court rulings and failing to govern in accordance with constitutional provisions.
“The crisis in Rivers State is largely due to the governor’s misconduct, his continuous disregard for judicial decisions, and his interference with the legislative process,” he stated.
Amaewhule called on residents to remain calm and cooperate with the newly appointed Sole Administrator, assuring that the Assembly would provide necessary support to ensure stability.
“As the Sole Administrator takes charge, we urge all citizens to remain peaceful. The Assembly will work with him to restore order,” he added.
He also expressed appreciation to the people of Rivers State for their patience and support during this period.
On Tuesday, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the state House of Assembly for six months.
The president explained that the decision was necessary to restore stability amid the ongoing power struggle between the governor and state legislators.
To oversee governance in the state, Tinubu appointed former Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Ibokette Ibas, as the Sole Administrator.
