Oando PLC has temporarily suspended operations on a key gas pipeline in Bayelsa State after it was targeted in a series of sabotage attacks, leading to a disruption in gas supplies to the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) terminal in Bonny, Rivers State.
The 24-inch Ogboinbiri–Obiobi pipeline, which passes through the Angiama and Angiamagbene areas in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, suffered damage at three different points on April 3.
The shutdown was initiated to prevent further environmental damage and to allow for a comprehensive investigation.
The company confirmed the incident in a statement issued by Idongesit Edet, Assistant Manager for Public Relations and Internal Communications.
“Oando PLC confirms that three separate acts of sabotage have affected its gas pipeline over the past week,” the statement read.
“As part of our emergency protocol, we swiftly activated containment efforts to reduce the environmental consequences and deployed our technical teams to the scene.”
According to the company, arrangements have been made for a Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) — a collaborative assessment by regulators, the operating company, and local stakeholders — to determine the cause and scope of the damage, as well as the volume of gas lost.
Oando stated that findings from the JIV would guide the company’s next steps and help implement long-term solutions to prevent future incidents.
Repairs on the pipeline will begin once the investigation is complete.
“The safety of lives, protection of the environment, and well-being of nearby communities remain our top priorities,” the company added.
“We are committed to restoring operations as quickly and safely as possible and will continue to share updates as more details become available.”
The attacks are the latest in a series of challenges facing Nigeria’s oil and gas infrastructure, often targeted by vandals and saboteurs in the Niger Delta region.
