Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has said Nigeria made a significant error by allowing Boko Haram and other armed groups to acquire military capabilities that sometimes rival those of the country’s security forces.
Speaking at an event in Kuje, Abuja, where Briech UAS unveiled attack drones and tested locally developed explosives, Mutfwang stressed the importance of ensuring that no group within the country wields power comparable to or greater than that of the security agencies.
Briech UAS, a Nigerian firm specializing in drone technology, showcased its innovations before key stakeholders.
“I want to acknowledge the efforts of our armed forces in safeguarding the nation. However, we have made a grave mistake by allowing non-state actors to build capabilities that, in some cases, challenge our security institutions. We must correct this imbalance,” Mutfwang said.
“Our focus should be on preventing any group from operating within our borders with the kind of firepower that competes with or exceeds that of those constitutionally mandated to protect our sovereignty. That is why this initiative is commendable, as it enables us to acquire cutting-edge technology without external constraints,” he added.
The governor also emphasized the need to support local security technology firms to minimize reliance on foreign suppliers and avoid bureaucratic delays in acquiring critical defense tools.
