Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will resist flooding for five decades – FG

The Federal Government has pledged that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, currently under construction, is being built to endure flooding and climate-related challenges for the next 50 years.

This commitment was made by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, during a stakeholder meeting in Lagos regarding the second phase of the project.

Umahi explained that the elevation of the road will be high enough to counteract potential flooding, matching the level of many first-floor buildings.

To reinforce the structure, retaining walls are being added along the route, and construction has already begun on these features.

In addition, the highway will include underground cable ducts, eliminating the need for network providers like MTN and others to dig through the road surface when installing or maintaining their infrastructure.

The minister also mentioned that CCTV cameras will be installed along the route, allowing emergency teams to respond to any incident in under five minutes.

He further highlighted that the highway will feature an evacuation corridor and will support environmental sustainability by earning carbon credits through the use of low-emission concrete pavement.

The road will be lined with trees, adding both beauty and environmental benefits.

Umahi also revealed that a major flyover is being developed to ease traffic flow around the Dangote Refinery

The flyover will include a 60-metre span and a balancing span of 41.6 metres, making the structure a potential point of interest and a tourist attraction.

To enhance traveler convenience, the minister stated that the state government has allocated land along the route for the creation of rest stops.

The centers will include fuel stations, convenience stores, eateries, and healthcare services for motorists.

Expressing gratitude, Umahi acknowledged the presence of stakeholders who attended the engagement out of a shared vision for national development, not for compensation.

He also praised the construction firm, Hitech Construction Company, for their dedication and quality work on the project.
