Gunmen kill police officer, injure another in Anambra checkpoint attack

Gunmen launched an attack on a police checkpoint at Omata Junction along the Nnewi-Oba Road in Idemili South Local Government Area, Anambra State, resulting in the death of one officer and the injury of another.

According to The PUNCH, in a statement released on Friday by the spokesperson for the State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, the assailants struck around 9:20 a.m., hurling explosive devices at the police personnel stationed at the checkpoint.

Ikenga revealed that the Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, has initiated a vigorous manhunt to track down the perpetrators.

He stated, “The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, has ordered a manhunt operation for the gunmen who attacked the police team at about 9:20 a.m. today, 9/8/2024, at a checkpoint, Omata junction, Nnewi Oba road.”

The Assistant Commissioner in charge of the Nnewi Area Command is spearheading the operation, collaborating with local residents to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Ikenga added, “Meanwhile, in the ensuing gun duel by the police operatives, one of the police personnel was fatally hit by an explosive thrown at them by the gunmen, and the other that is seriously injured is currently receiving treatment in the hospital.”

He concluded by noting that the police have secured the area, with further information to be provided as the situation develops.
