The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has revealed that more prominent members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) are on the verge of defecting to the ruling party.
Speaking at an empowerment event in Kano on Sunday, Ganduje expressed optimism that the APC’s governance style and policies were encouraging opposition members to switch allegiance.
“We appreciate your resilience against pressures from various political parties, particularly the NNPP, which is struggling to survive,” Ganduje stated.
He noted that defections were already happening discreetly and would soon be made public.
“People are quietly joining us, and in due time, we will officially welcome top figures, including senior officials, lawmakers, senators, and other key players from the NNPP. Many of them will soon align with our great party, the APC,” he added.
His remarks have fueled speculations that dissatisfaction with NNPP’s leadership is pushing its notable figures towards the APC.
Additionally, the recent attendance of Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin at private events hosted by an NNPP senator in Kano has sparked further discussions.
Senator Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South under the NNPP, had previously exited the APC ahead of the 2023 elections due to internal leadership disputes within the party.
