Five-year-old marriage dissolved over wife’s poor hygiene

On Wednesday, Folorunso Adeleye filed a petition for divorce at the Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, seeking to end his five-year marriage to Shukurat due to her poor hygiene and disrespectful behavior.

Adeleye, a mechanical engineer, testified that he had endured his wife’s behavior for too long. “My lord, Shukurat is persistently disrespectful and unclean. Her hygiene is so lacking that she only cleans the house when I complain,” he told the court.

He also accused Shukurat of failing to ensure their three-year-old child was on time for school, often arriving late.

Shukurat agreed to the divorce and did not dispute the allegations. She revealed that she had used the N150,000 provided by Adeleye for business on personal expenses, as he did not take responsibility for her daily needs after she moved in with him.

Shukurat requested that the court mandate Adeleye to take full responsibility for their child.

The court’s President, Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, granted the divorce, citing that both parties were unwilling to continue their marriage.

Akintayo granted the order restraining the respondent from harassing, disturbing and interfering with the private life of the petitioner henceforth
