Five ways Nigerians with WAEC can relocate abroad

As the Japa trend continues to grow, many Nigerians with only WAEC or SSCE certificates wonder if they have realistic opportunities to move abroad. While their options may not be as vast as those with higher degrees, several pathways are still available.

1. Study Programs With Minimal Entry Requirements

WAEC alone may not qualify for direct university admission in many countries, but there are alternative routes:
• Vocational & Foundation Programs: Countries like the UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, and Ireland offer foundation courses and vocational training programs that accept WAEC results.
• Community Colleges (USA & Canada): Some institutions allow WAEC holders to enroll in a two-year diploma, after which they can transfer to a university.
• Affordable Universities: Countries like Hungary, Turkey, and Poland accept WAEC for direct entry with relatively low tuition fees.

2. Work and Migration Programs

Certain countries provide employment opportunities for low-skilled and semi-skilled workers:
• United Kingdom: The Health & Care Worker Visa allows WAEC holders to work as care assistants, with employer-sponsored training.
• Canada: The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) offers jobs in sectors like agriculture, hospitality, and caregiving.
• Portugal & Poland: These countries have work visas available for roles in construction, farming, and factory work.

3. Scholarships & Exchange Programs

Though most scholarships require higher qualifications, some programs consider WAEC holders:
• Germany’s Ausbildung Program provides fully funded vocational training with a monthly stipend.
• Other Scholarships: While WAEC alone may not qualify, those who later complete diplomas can apply for Chevening, Erasmus, and Commonwealth Scholarships.

4. Family or Marriage-Based Relocation

Having a spouse or close relative abroad can provide legal migration opportunities through dependent or family reunification visas.

5. Visit Visas With Legal Stay Options

Countries like Turkey, UAE, Georgia, and some Schengen nations offer visit visas, which can sometimes lead to employment opportunities. However, it’s essential to follow legal migration processes when seeking a visa status change.

6. Learning In-Demand Skills for More Opportunities

To increase their chances of migration, WAEC holders can acquire skills in:
• Caregiving (for jobs in the UK and Canada)
• Technical Skills like welding, plumbing, or electrical work (for Germany, Poland, and Portugal)
• Digital Skills for remote jobs that can support migration plans

While relocating abroad with just WAEC may seem challenging, these pathways provide practical options for those willing to explore them.
