At the 4th Anniversary Lecture of the late Yinka Odumakin, human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), called on Nigerians to hold their leaders accountable, stressing that the country is still plagued by the “rule of rulers” instead of the rule of law.
The lecture, organized by the Oluyinka Odumakin Foundation, took place in Lagos on Wednesday, with the theme Selflessness in Leadership: The Yinka Odumakin Example.
In his address, Falana highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability in governance, urging Nigerians to ask questions and demand clear answers from their leaders.
He encouraged citizens to request their local government’s budget and ensure proper oversight of public funds, especially the constituency budgets of senators and House of Representatives members.
“We need to ensure that budgets are implemented properly and that leaders are held accountable to serve the people,” Falana said.
“It’s time for Nigerians to demand their rights and ensure the rule of law is respected.”
Falana criticized the current political system, accusing it of favoring the powerful while neglecting the needs of the general populace.
He pointed out the inconsistency in government actions, citing the alleged demolition of poor people’s homes in Lagos without proper authorization, while wealthier areas like Banana Island are allegedly exempt from similar scrutiny.
He reiterated the importance of unity, saying, “Injustice to one is injustice to all,” and urged Nigerians to join forces in the pursuit of justice and accountability.
In tribute to the late Yinka Odumakin, Falana urged the public to honor his memory by continuing to fight for democracy and good governance.
“Yinka’s legacy is a call for us all to hold our leaders accountable and ensure that democracy serves everyone, not just the few,” he said.
Gani Adams, leader of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), also spoke at the event, calling for a continued commitment to pro-democracy activism.
“We must continue the fight for democracy, as Yinka Odumakin did,” he stated.
Omowole Sowore, former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), praised Odumakin’s courage and unwavering commitment to truth, regardless of the consequences.
Dr. Joe Odumakin, widow of the late activist and president of Women Arise for Change Initiative, spoke on the importance of equality and justice for all Nigerians, stressing that the rule of law must apply to everyone, regardless of their status.
She promised to continue advocating for the values that Yinka Odumakin stood for.
The event was attended by prominent figures, including Jimi Agbaje, former Lagos State governorship candidate, activist Olamide Fusika (SAN), veteran journalist Richard Akinnola, and journalist Edmond Obilo.
Yinka Odumakin, who passed away on April 2, 2021, was remembered for his steadfast commitment to democracy and justice, ideals that continue to inspire many today.
