David Mark appeals for calm, warns against retaliation, ethnic profiling in Benue

Former Senate President David Mark has urged youths in Benue State to avoid retaliatory attacks and ethnic stereotyping in response to the recent wave of violence affecting several communities.

Over the past few weeks, suspected terrorists have launched deadly assaults on communities in local government areas such as Otukpo, Agatu, Apa, Ohimini, Okpokwu, Ado, Ogbadibo, Gwer-West, Gwer-East, Katsina-Ala, Logo, and Ukum. These attacks have led to numerous deaths and significant property damage.

In Gwer-West, the killing of civilians sparked demonstrations by young people, while fresh violence in Otukpo last week reportedly resulted in further casualties and kidnappings.

Reacting to the situation, Mark condemned the continued bloodshed and insecurity in the state, urging security agencies to thoroughly investigate and prosecute all those involved.

“It is reassuring that some of those behind these terrible acts have been taken into custody,” he said.

“I call for a complete and transparent investigation, and I hope everyone involved—either directly or indirectly—will face the full consequences under the law.”

He advised local youths to remain watchful and report any unusual activities or movements to law enforcement to help prevent further attacks.

Mark also warned against turning the situation into an ethnic or communal conflict, stressing that such actions would only worsen tensions.

“No group should be singled out or blamed for these incidents. Reprisals or ethnic profiling must be avoided at all costs,” he cautioned.

He expressed sympathy with the families affected by the attacks and offered prayers for the souls of those who lost their lives.
