Senate President Godswill Akpabio has strongly denied allegations by suspended Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who accused him of plotting her assassination.
He described the claim as “fabricated and baseless.”
In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja by his media aide, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio dismissed the accusation as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and damage his reputation.
The controversy erupted after Akpoti-Uduaghan, while addressing her supporters in Kogi State on Wednesday, alleged that Akpabio, in collaboration with former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello, planned to have her killed in Kogi rather than in Abuja.
The Kogi State Government has since refuted the claim.
Akpabio responded by calling the allegation “a reckless falsehood” designed to stir public unrest, attract media attention, and smear his image.
“This baseless accusation is nothing more than a calculated effort to discredit both my person and the office I occupy,” he stated.
He also recalled a previous accusation of sexual harassment made against him by Akpoti-Uduaghan, which she later abandoned without explanation.
According to him, her latest claim is part of a consistent pattern of misinformation and defamation.
Additionally, Akpabio referenced a similar situation involving former Senator Elisha Abbo, who, in 2023, withdrew his accusations and publicly apologized after admitting they were untrue.
He noted that Abbo was later removed from office following a Court of Appeal ruling that invalidated his election.
“These recurring attacks, given their timing and coordination, seem politically motivated, likely driven by hidden agendas aiming to destabilize the leadership of the Senate,” the statement read.
Akpabio reassured the public that he remains focused on his responsibilities and confirmed that legal action is being initiated.
Reports indicate that letters demanding public retractions, apologies, and compensation for reputational harm are being prepared for both Akpoti-Uduaghan and Abbo.
