Adeyanju hails AIG Gumel for allegedly opposing Rivers’ emergency declaration

Human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has applauded Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Usaini Gumel for his alleged firm opposition to the state of emergency rule in Rivers State.

In a statement to journalists and sighted by PROMPTNEWS on his verified Facebook page, Adeyanju described Gumel’s stance as demonstration of integrity and courage, qualities he said are rare in Nigeria’s leadership today.

Adeyanju noted that Gumel’s opposition to the alleged unconstitutional move reflects a commitment to upholding democratic principles.

“Nigeria needs more individuals like AIG Gumel who are willing to stand for the truth, regardless of pressure from higher authorities,” he stated.

However, Adeyanju condemned the actions of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for what he described as retaliation against Gumel.

Following the AIG’s remarks regarding the state of emergency and the suspension of Governor Sim Fubara, Gumel was reassigned to the Community Policing, Research, and Planning department—a move Adeyanju believes was meant to silence him.

He also pointed out that Gumel’s comments were made in an informal setting among colleagues, suggesting that his transfer was the result of a breach of trust rather than any professional misconduct.

Adeyanju called on more public figures and officials to take a stand against unconstitutional decisions, urging Nigerians to resist actions that undermine the rule of law.

“Defending democracy requires courage, and we must all play our part in ensuring that the rights of citizens and public servants alike are not trampled upon,” he said.
