Human rights advocate Deji Adeyanju has praised Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his adherence to the rule of law following the Supreme Court’s recent decision on local government administration.
In a statement on Monday, Adeyanju commended Fubara for directing the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to organize fresh local government elections.
He also lauded the appointment of Heads of Local Government Administration as interim leaders across the 23 local councils, describing the move as a demonstration of commitment to constitutional governance.
“The governor’s directive for outgoing local government chairmen to hand over by Monday, March 3, 2025, aligns with the Supreme Court’s stance against caretaker committees. This is a commendable step towards upholding democratic principles,” Adeyanju noted.
He encouraged Fubara to remain focused on governance despite ongoing political tensions, emphasizing that the well-being of Rivers residents should remain a top priority.
Adeyanju also criticized former Governor Nyesom Wike, accusing him of attempting to destabilize the state’s leadership. He urged Fubara to resist undue political influence and safeguard his administration’s objectives.
“We believe that by 2027, you will emerge even stronger, ready to overcome any political opposition, including that posed by Nyesom Wike. Your leadership offers hope, and history will recognize your courage and dedication,” he added.
