NERC cautions DisCos against forcing customers to pay for faulty meter replacement

-

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued a warning to electricity distribution companies (DisCos) over reports that some of them are asking customers to pay for replacing damaged or outdated meters.

In a public notice, obtained by MCC, NERC stated that such actions violate Order No. NERC/246/2021, which outlines procedures for replacing faulty and obsolete meters in the Nigerian electricity supply sector.

The commission emphasized that customers should not be charged for meter replacement if the damage was not caused by them.

According to the regulatory body, no customer who has a meter should be placed on estimated billing.

It further explained that when a DisCo identifies a meter as faulty or obsolete, it must replace it free of charge, as long as the customer is not responsible for the defect.

NERC reaffirmed its dedication to protecting the rights and interests of electricity consumers by ensuring all licensees comply with established rules.

The commission also pledged to penalize any DisCo that fails to meet regulatory requirements.

Customers who experience non-compliance from their electricity providers are encouraged to report.

NERC urged electricity users across the country to remain alert and report any DisCo that disregards the regulation.
