A recent operation by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) successfully prevented the smuggling of 175,000 bottles of codeine-based syrup from India into Nigeria.
NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi revealed that the interception occurred during a collaborative inspection involving customs and other security agencies in Abuja last Friday.
This interception closely follows a similar seizure of 175,000 bottles of codeine at the Port Harcourt Port complex in Onne, Rivers state, just a week earlier.
Babafemi highlighted that both seizures were prompted by prior intelligence, leading to thorough examinations of the shipments. The latest seizure comprised 875 cartons of codeine-containing bottles, with a total weight of 26,250kg.
In another development, NDLEA officers uncovered five parcels containing illicit drugs concealed within women’s clothing and synthetic hair, destined for the United States and United Kingdom.
