NAFDAC uncovers N114m worth of adulterated alcohol in Lagos

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has shut down an illicit liquor operation in Lagos, where expired and adulterated alcoholic drinks were being packaged and sold.

According to NAFDAC, the suspect, Madu Abuchi Simon, was apprehended while producing counterfeit versions of high-end alcoholic brands such as Hennessy, Baileys, Jameson, William Lawson, Martell, and St. Remy. He allegedly attempted to flee but was intercepted by officials.

Upon inspection of the facility, authorities recovered expired Amarula cream liqueur, empty branded bottles and boxes, stickers, cooking stoves, buckets, cotton wool, and a mysterious purple chemical used to clean and reuse containers.

The agency announced on social media: “Over 100 cartons of assorted adulterated alcoholic beverages, valued at more than N114 million, were confiscated and evacuated. The outlet has been sealed pending further investigation.”

They added: “NAFDAC has uncovered an operation involved in the sale of adulterated and expired alcoholic beverages in Lagos.

“One Mr. Madu Abuchi Simon was caught in the act of falsifying popular alcoholic brands including Hennessy, William Lawson, Baileys, Martell, St. Remy, and Jameson.”

The public was cautioned to steer clear of shady liquor dealers. “NAFDAC strongly advises the public to buy alcoholic products only from reputable vendors and to report any suspicious activity to the nearest NAFDAC office.

“The Agency remains committed to protecting public health and ensuring consumer safety.”
