Efforts are underway to secure justice for a boy detained at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre, following allegations of theft and public disturbance, charges his supporters insist are baseless.
The boy, who had previously gone viral during the 2023 elections for his brave act of halting Peter Obi’s convoy, was reportedly apprehended by neighbours who accused him of being involved in criminal activities.
He was handed over to police, arraigned in court, and remanded pending legal advice from the DPP.
In a series of tweets, X user Nurudeen Hassana, known online as @Hausa_girl, shared her involvement in the case, stating, “He was coming back from work the day some guys in the street apprehended him and took him to the police station.
The guys told the police that he’s among the people stealing and fighting in the area, which is not true.
He’s being charged with stealing and fighting.”
She emphasized the toll the incident had taken on him since the election.
“He’s suffering from the entitlement people had when he was gifted money during the last election.”
In a follow-up post on Tuesday, Hassana revealed that human rights advocate Inibehe Effiong had taken an interest in the case and would be visiting the correctional centre with the boy’s mother.
“Good morning, all. So we’re talking to @InibeheEffiong about this case, and we’ll be seeing him on Thursday alongside the boy’s mother and then proceed to the correctional centre where he’s been held to get the full brief from the boy. I’ll keep updating you all,” she tweeted.
