Man claims girlfriend conspired with cultists to rob him of N15.5m

A 35-year-old man, Emeka Nwogu, endured a shocking betrayal on Valentine’s Day when his 25-year-old girlfriend allegedly teamed up with her younger brother and a group of cultists to attack and rob him of N15.5 million, along with his personal belongings, including three mobile phones.

The bizarre event unfolded in the Ago Palace Way area of Lagos, after the couple spent a romantic evening together at a hotel.

The next day, as they decided to dine out, Nwogu remained unaware that his girlfriend had sinister plans involving her brother and his associates.

According to police reports, while they were at a restaurant enjoying their meal, the girlfriend insisted that they return to the hotel so she could use the restroom.

Though Nwogu felt uneasy when they passed the bus stop near the hotel, she reassured him. However, at a different bus stop, they were ambushed by armed men, who dragged them to a secluded location within a nearby estate. The attackers beat and tortured Nwogu with guns and axes, forcing him to reveal the passwords to his Bitcoin, Binance, and Trust accounts.

They then made off with about $9,700, his phones, and other valuables.

After the attack, both Nwogu and his girlfriend reported the incident to the Ago Palace police station. However, the case took an unexpected turn when one of the security guards at the scene revealed that he had often seen the girlfriend with one of the attackers.

This led to her arrest, where she admitted to conspiring with her younger brother and his cultist friends.

She confessed to the police that she orchestrated the attack after discovering flirtatious messages on Nwogu’s WhatsApp, which made her angry enough to seek revenge.

The investigation was taken over by the Commissioner of Police Special Squad 1, who traced her residence. However, her brother had already fled the area.

In an interesting development, the girlfriend’s father promised to recover the stolen items. However, he only returned N3 million out of the N5 million that was reportedly set aside for his daughter’s share of the loot.

Further investigations led to the arrest of four additional suspects, who admitted to being members of the Aiye confraternity. The suspects, aged between 20 and 25, were apprehended with a locally made gun, cartridges, a battle axe, and N7.5 million in cash.

Nwogu, still reeling from the betrayal, spoke to the media, expressing his shock over his girlfriend’s involvement in the crime. “We had a great time on Valentine’s night, but the next day, while we were at the lounge, she kept stepping out to take phone calls.
I never imagined she was plotting against me. I appreciate the CP squad for their swift action,” he said.

This squad had previously made headlines for dismantling a notorious kidnapping ring operating around the Ladipo market in Lagos.
