Father of slain vigilante demands justice, compensation from Kano govt

Muhammadu Rabiu, the father of Surajo Rabiu, a vigilante member who was fatally stabbed while accompanying Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II’s entourage after Eid prayers, has called on the Kano State Government and the Emirate Council to ensure justice is served and provide compensation for his son’s death.

In an interview with SolaceBase on Tuesday, Rabiu recounted the heartbreaking events of March 30, 2025, when his 26-year-old son was killed.

Surajo, the fourth of twelve children, belonged to the Vigilante Group in Jaba Community, Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State.

According to him, Surajo had initially decided to stay back and focus on his electrical repair business but later changed his mind, put on his vigilante uniform, and left for the Eid prayer ground. Hours later, the family received the tragic news of his death.

“Surajo was preparing, as he always did, for the Eid prayer. As a vigilante, he was frequently called upon to assist security personnel in maintaining order at public events. He was a committed and diligent young man,” Rabiu said.

He described his son as well-mannered, hardworking, and dedicated, stating that he was known for his sense of responsibility and had no connections with criminal elements.

The family is demanding a detailed investigation into the circumstances that led to his death, particularly since security agencies had placed a ban on Durbar-related activities due to security concerns. The attack also left another individual, Aminu Suleman from Kofar Mata Quarters, injured and currently receiving treatment at Murtala Mohammed Specialists Hospital.

“We are urging the Kano State Government and the Emirate Council to ensure a thorough investigation, deliver justice, and compensate us for his loss. He was on duty, protecting lives and property, when he was killed,” Rabiu stated.

He also mentioned plans to engage with the leadership of the Vigilante Group to discuss the next course of action regarding his son’s untimely death.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspects, Usman Sagiru and Nasir Idris, in connection with the killing. The state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has also set up a Special Investigation Panel (SIP) to look into the case and ensure those responsible face justice.
