LP’s Sunday Umehia defects to APC, cites party leadership crisis

-

Another Labour Party (LP) lawmaker, Sunday Umehia, representing Ezeagu/Udi federal constituency of Enugu State, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Umehia cited the protracted leadership crisis in the LP, which has led to multiple factions claiming leadership of the party, as the reason for his defection.

In his letter of defection, Umehia stated that the crisis has made it difficult for members to know who to defer to, and he has therefore decided to join the APC to support President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.

The defection has sparked a reaction from the Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, who called for a review of the constitutional provision on defection to safeguard democracy. Chinda also urged the Speaker to declare the seats of the defecting lawmakers vacant and asked that those who defected vacate their leadership positions in committees.
