Leadership tussles rock NNPP as lawmakers, Kwankwasiyya groups move to APC

-

Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is witnessing a surge in new membership as several legislators and political groups have severed ties with their former parties over growing internal disagreements.

Two members of the House of Representatives, Kabiru Hassan Rurum and Abdullahi Sani, announced their departure from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and pledged allegiance to the APC.

The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, confirmed their defections during plenary.

Rurum and Sani represent Rano/Bunkure/Kibiya and Karaye/Rogo Federal Constituencies, respectively, in Kano State.

Both lawmakers pointed to unresolved internal issues within the NNPP, which they claim have fragmented the party’s unity and direction.

Also switching camps is Oluwole Oke from Osun State, who previously represented the Oriade/Obokun Constituency under the PDP. Oke had earlier made his intentions known and has now formalised his move to the APC.

The Speaker also revealed that a total of 30 lawmakers have recently defected, with 27 choosing to join the APC from a mix of opposition parties, including the PDP, Labour Party, ADC, and NNPP.

Abdullahi Ganduje, the APC National Chairman, was present during the session and gave a warm reception to the new entrants.

He commended them for what he described as a wise and timely decision.

Meanwhile, Kano State lawmaker Zubairu Hamza Masu also left the NNPP, citing leadership confusion and internal factions as reasons for his defection.

Representing Sumaila Constituency, Masu’s resignation letter was read by the State Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ismail Falgore.

Masu detailed ongoing tussles for leadership positions at both state and national levels, involving figures such as Suleiman Hashim Dungurawa, Senator Mas’ud El-Jibrin Doguwa, Ahmed Ajuji, and Agbo Major. He lamented the barrage of court cases plaguing the party and weakening its structure.

Adding to the APC’s growing strength, six political groups aligned with the Kwankwasiyya ideology have also defected.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin welcomed the groups, which include Kwankwasiyya Ko Ɗar-Ɗar, Principals Forum, Haske Kwankwasiyya, Millennium Youth Awareness Kwankwasiyya, Ja’en-Ring Road Kwankwasiyya Elders, and Kano Sai Abinda Abba Ya Ce Youth Awareness.

With the APC steadily absorbing disillusioned lawmakers and political blocs, the balance of power continues to shift as the 2027 elections approach.
