An analysis of Nigeria’s government spending records has shown that the Nigeria Police Force allocated a total of N86 million for festive decorations in December 2024.
The project covered the Force Headquarters and the official residences of Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, located in Abuja and Lagos.
The payment, listed under “Police Command and Formations,” was made to Wysdum Integrated Services Limited for what was officially termed “Comprehensive Christmas Decoration.”
The timing of this expenditure has drawn criticism, especially as concerns mount over the poor welfare of police officers.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier responded to these concerns by promising to address issues related to meager pensions and low wages within the police force.
IGP Egbetokun also acknowledged the situation during a stakeholders’ forum with retired officers and pension administrators, where he confirmed submitting a proposal to the presidency requesting increased financial support.
“We are hopeful the intervention will improve police earnings,” he stated, adding that President Tinubu had expressed agreement and a willingness to assist.
However, the revelation of such a large sum spent on holiday decorations, while police officers continue to face financial hardship, has intensified scrutiny of the police leadership’s fiscal decisions, especially in the context of Nigeria’s limited public revenue.
