Sanusi to be interrogated in Kano over Eid incident

The Nigeria Police Force has cancelled its earlier invitation to Alhaji Lamido Sanusi regarding the unrest that broke out during the Eid festivities in Kano on March 30, 2025.

Instead, the police have instructed officers from the Force Intelligence Department (FID) to travel to Kano to take his statement on the incident.

This development was made public on Sunday in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

According to him, the decision to rescind the invitation came after consultations with key stakeholders and was in line with the Inspector-General of Police’s (IGP) aim to prevent law enforcement actions from being seen as politically motivated.

“To avoid misinterpretations or any form of politicization, the IGP has ordered the withdrawal of the letter inviting Alhaji Sanusi,” the statement explained. “Instead, FID operatives will obtain his statement in Kano.”

The police had initially invited Sanusi to provide his perspective on the events that triggered a breakdown of order in the state, which resulted in the death of one person, identified as Usman Sagiru, and injuries to several others.

According to the police, intelligence gathered before the Sallah celebration suggested that the two rival emirs—Alhaji Ado Bayero and Alhaji Sanusi—planned to host separate Durbar processions, a traditional ceremonial horse ride.

Concerned about the potential for violence, the IGP deployed Deputy Inspector-General of Police Abubakar Sadiq to mediate between both sides and the state government.

An agreement was reached, the police said, that no Durbar would take place and that neither claimant to the throne would participate in a horse procession on the day of the festival.

Despite this consensus, the police stated that Sanusi, who arrived at the Eid grounds by car, later proceeded on horseback, escorted by local vigilante members.

The move reportedly led to clashes with some youths in the area, culminating in the fatal confrontation.

“This incident was exactly what the police sought to avert by engaging both parties ahead of the celebration,” the statement added.

The police confirmed that several arrests have already been made, and investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Adejobi stressed that the police will continue to handle the case with fairness, objectivity, and a strong commitment to justice.

“Our approach remains rooted in professionalism, neutrality, and a dedication to ensuring that all responsible parties are held accountable,” he stated.
