Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, has approved the disbursement of previously withheld local government allocations.
Speaking at a meeting with Heads of Local Government Administrators in Port Harcourt on Friday, the former Chief of Naval Staff emphasized the importance of timely salary payments.
He acknowledged the financial difficulties faced by local government workers and assured them that their overdue salaries would be paid without further delay.
“I understand the struggles of the workers,” Ibas stated, reaffirming his commitment to ensuring prompt salary payments.
He also mandated local government councils to submit wage bills with appropriate documentation through the office of the Head of Service, emphasizing strict financial accountability.
According to Ibas, his administration will not tolerate mismanagement of public funds, and measures will be taken to ensure transparency.
Beyond financial matters, Ibas urged local government leaders to take an active role in maintaining security in their jurisdictions.
He reiterated that good governance should be reflected in tangible improvements over the next six months.
Clifford Paul, President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees and Administrator of Port Harcourt Local Government Area, expressed appreciation for the administrator’s efforts.
He acknowledged the developmental progress in the state despite political challenges and lauded the Federal Government’s decision to appoint Ibas, citing his leadership qualities.
Paul further appealed for continued prioritization of workers’ welfare, revealing that local government employees had been owed two months’ salaries but were now hopeful following the release of the withheld funds.
