The House of Representatives has instructed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to block access to pornographic websites nationwide.
The decision followed a motion presented by Dalhatu Tafaki, a lawmaker from Katsina State, who argued that unrestricted access to explicit content is eroding societal and moral values.
Tafaki highlighted concerns raised by psychologists and sociologists, noting that many young Nigerians have become addicted to such content, which could have serious psychological and social consequences.
He also referenced countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia where similar restrictions have been enforced.
“Experts have warned about the mental, psychological, and social impact of consuming pornographic material,” he stated.
Following a voice vote approved by the Speaker, the House resolved that curbing access to such content would help protect Nigerians, particularly the younger generation.
Lawmakers also directed the NCC to enforce compliance among telecommunication companies and impose penalties on any provider that fails to adhere to the directive.
