The federal government has once again disbursed N33,000 as the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in February, despite previous assurances that the amount would be raised to N77,000.
Corps members had been looking forward to an increase in their allowance since President Bola Tinubu approved a new national minimum wage of N70,000 last year.
However, the expected adjustment to their payment has not yet been implemented.
Many have voiced their disappointment on social media, lamenting the financial hardship they face while serving in different parts of the country.
Their hopes were heightened in January when the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, informed corps members in Katsina State that they would begin receiving N77,000 from February.
Despite this promise, the February payment remained at N33,000, leaving corps members frustrated.
Some took to social media to express their dissatisfaction. One person wrote, “They’ve paid us 33k again! This government is so unfair.” Another said, “NYSC is making things difficult for us. I spend over 100k every month, and 33k can’t even cover my transport or data expenses. Why is 77k so hard to pay?”
