Election guidelines, campaigns to begin for Lagos LG polls

Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has confirmed that the local government elections will take place on July 12, 2025, with preparations already underway.

Tope Ojo, LASIEC’s Head of Public Affairs, made the announcement on Friday, highlighting that the election will fill 57 chairmanship and 376 councillorship seats in the state’s 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs.

Ojo emphasized that a supplementary election is scheduled for July 19, should a rerun be necessary in any wards or councils.

As the tenure of current local government officials nears its end, LASIEC is moving forward with election arrangements to avoid any gap in governance.

With the official Notice of Election now issued, political parties are encouraged to visit LASIEC headquarters to obtain nomination forms for their candidates.

Additionally, a stakeholders’ meeting with all registered political parties is scheduled for Tuesday.

LASIEC also announced that detailed Election Guidelines will be published on April 17, laying out the framework for the election, including candidate nomination timelines and the campaign period.

Campaigns will commence on April 18 and continue through to July 9, providing nearly three months for political parties to engage with voters.

Justice Ayotunde Phillips (rtd), LASIEC’s Chairperson, assured the public that the Commission is committed to conducting a transparent and credible election, encouraging active participation from political parties, security agencies, civil society organizations, and citizens to ensure a peaceful electoral process.

The results of this election are expected to be critical in shaping the political landscape in Lagos, especially as political parties prepare for the 2027 general elections.
