House of Reps approves Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills despite controversy

Following months of intense deliberation, the Nigerian House of Representatives has given its approval to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tax reform bills.

Presidential spokesperson and Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, announced the decision on Thursday through his official X account.

Although he did not disclose specific details, he confirmed that the bills were passed on March 13, 2025.

The approval comes amid sustained opposition to the reforms.

The Northern Nigeria Governors’ Forum had previously rejected the proposed value-added tax (VAT) derivation model outlined in the Nigeria Tax Bill, while the National Economic Council also expressed concerns about the framework.

President Tinubu had initially introduced four tax reform bills to the National Assembly on October 3, 2024.

These include the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.
