A church in Zagami village, Kebbi State, became the target of a brutal attack on Sunday when armed men believed to be part of the Lakurawa gang disrupted a morning service and abducted several attendees.
The assailants, who were reportedly riding motorcycles, fired gunshots to disperse the crowd before seizing a yet-to-be-determined number of church members and retreating into the forest.
Mr. Ezekiel Danjuma, one of the churchgoers who escaped, narrated the chaotic scene. According to him, the gunmen came in large numbers and encircled the building before launching the attack.
“They were firing everywhere. It was chaos. I escaped through the back, but many people couldn’t,” he said.
The attack has deeply unsettled residents of Zagami, a farming community within the Kebbi South Senatorial District, which comprises seven local governments including Danko/Wasagu, Sakaba, and Yauri.
As of press time, no official statement had been issued by law enforcement. Meanwhile, residents are pleading with the Kebbi State Government and security agencies to take swift measures to secure the release of the victims and restore peace in the region.
