The Unified/Harmonized Benue State University Alumni Association (BSUAA) National Elective Convention 2025 held on Saturday, May 10, 2025 has sent a shock wave to many branches, chapters, aspirants and stakeholders leading to unexpected withdrawals from the race and participation in the electoral process.
Held in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, the electoral process was allegedly marred by the Benue State government interference, electoral frauds, national delegate list manipulation and lack of transparency on the part of the ‘Unified/ Harmonized Independent Electoral Committee’.
The Benue State government was accused of having an ‘anointed’ candidate among the presidential aspirants in the elections that prompted two major contenders to withdraw from the race on Friday. Although MCC News could not independently verify this claim at the time of filing this report.
The development further divided the Association that has been struggling over the years to unite two major factions of the alumni under Agbadu and Vihimga factional blocs, on Friday night when the electoral committee published a ‘mystery’ delegate list different from the original list submitted by branches and chapters including FCT branch and chapters to the committee.
However, the Chairman of the electoral committee tendered his apologies to the Association on the BSUAA WhatsApp group, stating that it was a typographical error by the typist while promising the aggrieved members of the publication of the original list before the election the next day (Saturday). Although it’s, however, not clear if the promise was kept as there was no such publication on the platform before the elections commenced on Saturday morning.
Reacting to what aggrieved BSUAA members on its national WhatsApp group described as ‘selection’, they wrote:
“Very soon government will start electing church elders for churches in Benue State”.
“It’s quite unfortunate that we’ve found ourselves here. But people should always remember that power is transient and NO one can play God. This is electoral corruption of the highest level”.
“We will not forget this act by the Government after putting us through a lot.
When we said the Government was behind the various acts instigating some groups to take legal actions that stampeded the electoral processes for almost two years, people thought it was a joke. The ugly hand behind all that happened behind the scene has finally raised it head.
We will not forget.”
“That should be a selection and not election”.
“Its so shameful university ALUMNI acting scripts written by government house for the selfish interest of of som corrupt members as if its okada union.”
“Benue State government prefers a woman candidate over thousands of aggrieved supporters of qualified candidates.
Let it be on record that the Benue State Government created more enemies to itself.
Bad government even Alumni election you’re interfering rubbish.”
FCT branch in its withdrawal press statement said in part, “The decision of the branch to withdraw from the BSUAA elections is based on the following grounds:
“1. Manipulations and total exclusion of FCT delegates from the list of national delegates as published on the BSUAA national platform by the electoral committee on May 9, 2025;
“2. Abuse of electoral process by the electoral committee;
“3. Agbadu faction’s over-bearing influence on the electoral process;
“4. Disenfranchisement of aspirants from the factional bloc in the electoral process;
“5. Lack of transparency in the electoral process.
“Based on the above grounds, FCT branch distances itself from the May 10, 2025 elections and shall, therefore, not recognize the leadership that may emerge from the elections.”
