Governor Mohammed Bago has expressed deep dissatisfaction with ongoing public works in Niger State, blaming a lack of transparency and professionalism among officials and contractors for the stalling of key infrastructure projects.
In a strongly worded video now trending on social media, Bago pointed fingers at the Ministry of Works, New Niger Development Company, and project consultants, accusing them of covering up inefficiencies.
“I want to first rebuke the consultants, the Ministry of Work, and the New Niger Development company for their sharp practices and lackadaisical attitude for not reporting the right thing on the ongoing projects in the state,” he said.
According to Bago, the state government had withheld payments to some contractors due to “sharp practices” and inconsistencies in reporting.
He noted that while a few contractors had delivered on their commitments, others were still struggling with simple infrastructure like drainage.
“Some are performing superlative while some are performing very decimally,” Bago stated.
He also questioned the legitimacy of some Certificates of Verification being submitted to banks, adding, “Some of you have your Certificate of Verification (CV) in the banks, I stopped it because I am not satisfied.”
Governor Bago assured that only contractors with a proven ability to complete their assignments will be paid.
“At my own discretion, I will approve for those I think have the capacity to continue, you will get your payment,” he said.
He made it clear that the Ministry of Works lacks the authority to greenlight payments without rigorous oversight, signalling a shift toward more accountable governance.
